Want to feel on top of the world? Head to Portsmouth and ascend the Spinnaker Tower, which offers panoramic views of the city, harbour and surrounding Solent. Either go ‘pinkies up’ with the High Tea in the Clouds experience or ‘don’t look down’ if you choose to abseil the 558-foot-tall building.

As well as having oceanic links to the largest island in England, Portsmouth also has maritime links to the past. Visit Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to see – and learn about – a number of famous ships, including the warship Mary Rose, which sank in the Solent in 1545 and wasn’t recovered until 1982.
